Author: Bethany Spencer. Homework as a concept has been around for hundreds of years, and today is considered the norm for modern schools. At secondary level, schools set regular homework via a whole-school homework policy. This can take many forms and is sometimes given a different name like 'home learning' or 'Independent study', but the concept of completing work outside of the classroom remains the same. Homework helps to " develop learners' knowledge and allow them more choice in how they express their work".

Should homework be scrapped?: BOLD
The evidence around homework is interesting. We know that pupils who complete homework tend to be more successful, but we cannot say with certainty that this is because of the homework, or other factors. We also know that gains in primary from homework are more modest than those in secondary, and even in secondary there is massive variation in studies. Read the EEF toolkit summaries of homework at primary and homework at secondary for a fuller exploration.

At Selwyn Primary School, we continue to develop both the content of our curriculum, and its delivery. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, we have ensured that we use Google Classroom and related G Suite applications to deliver learning online to those who are not able to come into school for reasons related to the pandemic. We have developed a whole school policy which outlines the way in which we have developed this provision, which is available as a document to download on this page.
